There are two cities called Cimpulung (or now, with the new orthography, Campulung).

There is Campulung Muscel in Walachia, in the hills at the bottom of the Southern Carpathian mountains and there is Campulung Moldovenesc, up North, in the Eastern Carpathians of Moldova.

Which one does your Grandmother come from?

Hey, Sandra, this search for your grandmother's family would make an interesting subject for a blog!

Hey, they are both gorgeous areas. C Muscel may be a bit more industrialised these days, if I am not mistaken Romania's manufacturer of 4x4 cars (ARO) is there. But the centre of town is very nice, with many beautiful 19 century houses, many of which have been restored over the last few years. I went there 2 years ago and stayed for 3 days. A lot of beautiful scenery around the city, too.

C Moldovenesc I haven't been to since before 1989, so I don't remember a great deal. But I know the areas is one of the most spectacular in the country. It's in a region called Bucovina (the Romanian part, there is also Ukrainian part, too), famous for its painted monasteries. Now these are impressive, even if one is not necessarily religious. It's because the painting is not just on the inside, but also on the outer walls. And of course, I am biased because my dad comes from that region, too :))
